Citrus Cleanse: for Eco-Friendly Cleaning

My mom used to get this cleaning degreaser that smelled like orange and worked really really well. However, despite the appealing citrus aroma, there was an underlying chemical smell that did not sit well with me, not to mention it came packaged in a plastic bottle. Concerned about environmental impact, as well as my kids and pets, I began searching for alternatives. I wanted to find something similar but a DIY cleaner that I could feel good about using to make my house sparkle.

Already a user of a vinegar for cleaning, I wanted to explore incorporating orange into my routine. After doing some research on natural cleaners, I stumbled upon the wonders of using orange peels for cleaning purposes.

The search for a good, natural cleaner often leads us down the path of trial and error, and we have found a simple solution we love! It is the simple combination of orange peels and vinegar.

Orange peels contain d-limonene, a natural solvent that cuts through grease and dirt with ease. This makes them an excellent ingredient for a homemade degreaser that is both effective and environmentally friendly. Unlike some commercial cleaners that rely on harsh chemicals, orange peels offer a gentle yet potent cleaning solution. It is our kitchen cleaning go to!

Here is how we make our cleaning solution:

1. Collect the peels from oranges / 2-3 cuties (we always have on hand) or 1-2 oranges (for a 24 oz jar pictured above) – ensure the peels are free of any remaining fruit flesh.

2. Place the peels in a glass jar, filling it about halfway.

3. Pour white distilled vinegar over the peels until they are fully submerged.

4. Seal the jar and let it sit in a cool, dark place for two weeks to allow the oils from the peels to infuse into the vinegar.

5. After the infusion period, strain the liquid to remove the peels into a glass jar with a lid.

6. Using a spray bottle, add concentrated orange-vinegar solution with water, a 1:1 works well for general cleaning purposes.

This homemade cleaner is versatile and can be used on various surfaces, from kitchen counters to bathroom tiles. We recommend testing it on a small area first, especially on delicate surfaces like marble or granite, to prevent any potential damage.

Unlike many commercial cleaners that contain harsh chemicals, orange peel cleaner is made from natural ingredients and can be stored in reusable glass bottles. Additionally, repurposing orange peels that would otherwise be thrown in the garbage can help to minimize food waste and promote sustainability.

By embracing the natural cleaning power of orange peels, you are not only achieving a sparkling clean home but also contributing to a more sustainable lifestyle. It is a small step that can have a significant impact on both your living space and the planet.

Happy cleaning!
